Ordinary world song7/11/2023 ![]() As a result, it became a number three hit before its video even made it to MTV. ![]() It became the first single from the Duran Duran album after getting a massive response when leaked to a few radio stations in Florida. The result was a ballad that was powerful enough for young listeners but deep enough for older listeners and this duality made "Ordinary World" a natural hit. Simon LeBon's vocal restrains the showy theatrics he deploys on the group's dance-oriented material in favor of a delivery that is rich in emotion but tastefully restrained. Duran Duran's recording of "Ordinary World" gives this ballad plenty of texture, building up from a solid and surprisingly hard-hitting back beat and adding sharp acoustic and electric guitar riffs that are fleshed out with subtle washes of synthesizer. The song's lyrics depict a man who cushions himself from the pain of a breakup by returning to the outside world: "And I won't cry for yesterday/There's an ordinary world I somehow have to find/And as I try to make my way to the ordinary world/I will learn to survive." These words have a surprisingly direct and adult tone that stands in direct contrast to the colorful wordplay of past hits like "The Reflex." The music behind these sentiments avoids dance rhythms and new wave minimalism to create a warm ballad feel, matching elegant verses full of entrancing repeating-note hooks with a rousing chorus built on soaring runs of ascending notes. They immediately hit paydirt with "Ordinary World," a lushly textured ballad that became a massive surprise hit at the end of 1992. Instead, the group had reinvented themselves yet again as a journeyman pop outfit that used their pop songcraft skills to create a slick combination of dance textures and earthier rock music elements. However, the group on this album was neither the new wave band of the early '80s or the dance music outfit of the late '80s. Pop fans nostalgic for new wave sounds got a pleasant surprise in the early '90s when Duran Duran made an impressive comeback with their self-titled 1993 album. 'Ordinary World' is a song by English rock band Duran Duran, released in December 1992 as the first single from their self-titled album (1993), commonly known as The Wedding Album.
